About the office

This role sits within the Wellbeing Office which is within the Pro Vice Chancellor, Student Experience portfolio alongside Student Success, Indigenous Education, Chaplaincy, Libraries and Student Life. Student Wellbeing delivers a tailored and holistic suite of supports to students to help them stay engaged in study and thrive during their university years.

The Office includes Access and Inclusion, Student Counselling, Respect@ND, Grievances and the Student hardship Assistance Fund.

 About the role

The Team Leader, Student Counselling Service, Student Wellbeing works with the counselling team to provide a contemporary counselling service that responds to students changing needs. The position reports to the National Manager, Student Wellbeing with their expertise being highly valued in the preparation of collaborative, proactive and strategic processes and supports associated with contemporary issues facing Australian Universities such as the National Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender Based Violence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the University’s counselling service, ensuring confidentiality, ethical practice, and appropriate referrals to external agencies for long-term student support.
  • Provide national leadership of the counselling team, including staff management and professional development, ensuring services operate ethically, within scope, and in line with university policies.
  • Respond to critical incidents and deliver emergency counselling across diverse mental health issues in accordance with university procedures.
  • Contribute strategic input to student engagement initiatives across schools and campuses, promoting counselling services as part of the broader student wellbeing framework, including participation in events such as Orientation and Open Days.
  • Lead the development and review of policies and procedures to ensure best practice and effective resource use within Student Counselling programs.
  • Undertake reporting and service development activities, including preparing reports, participating in committees, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with academic and professional staff to provide specialist input into university initiatives for mental wellbeing, safety, pastoral care, mediation, and learning support.

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • Supportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic University.
  • Possession of a postgraduate degree qualification in psychology or counselling with relevant work experience.
  • Hold registration with a relevant professional body AHPRA and/or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and/or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
  • Demonstrated experience in similar role that provided supervision and direction to a team and required oversight of performance and services within scope of practice.
  • Ability to understand, respond and provide a range of counselling services tailored to student needs that is evidence-based.
  • Ability to deliver workshops, training and facilitating groups such as Client-Centred and Short-term Solution Focused Counselling, CBT, ACT and Mindfulness at both the individual and group level.
  • Proven communicator, driving consensus and teamwork across departments and leadership
  • Highly developed relational skills including the ability to gain confidence, influence and engage with a wide range of internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary issues in the higher education sector.
